Death Note, Vol. 1, by Tsugumi Ohba

Light Yagami is a talented student who is at the top of his class and with a bright future ahead of him. The only issue is that he's bored, until one day he comes across the Death Note. Any person's name that's written down in the notebook dies. Discovering this, Light uses the Death Note to seek out complete justice. Being intelligent and sly, he proves to be a good killer, but for how long until he get caught by the authorities? On top of that, there's the mysterious man who is on his trail.
I recommend this for complex-thinking mystery readers.

I enjoyed this manga very much with its well thought out plot and its intense characters. You get captured into his mind and his perseverance to dominate the world, as cruel as it seems. And you question yourself : is killing people who brought misfortunes to others a good or bad thing? Or is there really no good or bad, but power and the weak? Needless to say, it’s a very interesting read with vivid pictures and I would recommend this to anyone.

Light Yagami, the picture perfect student with the flawless physically fitted body, outstandingly intelligent, athletic, debonair, charismatic, clever and what not. Being the ideal model student of Japan, his blissful life lacks absolutely nothing. That’s where is his problem germinates; excess boredom. All that changes when a Shinigami death god drops a Death Note which coincidently Light happens to find. As Light’s world turns upside down he vows to cleanse the world of crime with the power of Death Note. Now no boundaries are strong enough to hold back nor distract dexterous Light’s fierce focus from his noble goal. But a sudden extinction of criminals is surely a flashing brouhaha which is ought to seek the police authority and the government’s attention. Meanwhile ,the legendary anonymous detective L makes a shocking tribute as he decides to participate in this case. L has never revealed his identity and only solves complicated cases alone behind the shadows. This is quite rare and lucky for Japan to have on their side the world’s number one detective who’s interested in the Kira case (Kira means death in Japanese and it is a name given to Light by the police since they do not know who is behind all the killings). Now the two geniuses battle in the shadows all in the name of justice.

Death Note has gained tremendous amount of popularity around the globe and I could not have understood why until I finished reading the first volume. The rich psychology it contains in each chapter is far beyond astonishing especially considering it is simply a manga. Another factor which makes this manga more superior than most mangas out there is its marvelously detailed and thrilling art. Both the art and storyline of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s collaboration has given a birth to probably the most exciting story I have read I a long time. The plot itself is what makes this story gripping. Not only will you have a thrilling ride going through the twists and turns, but it’ll also make you cogitate and question certain things in the real world. The character Light Yagami is such an eye catching figure because he is the definition of a model student with all that he needs, and to sugarcoat it all the slight breeze of evilness which is evolving in him is what makes him even more attractive. What impresses me the most is how the conflict isn’t too complicated to make the story exciting; in fact it is completely the opposite. The story sprouts with a very simple Death Note and a Shinigami but as one begins to read further it pulls them deeper into the appealing story raising remarkable critical thinking. Death Note holds a very special place in my heart and I most certainly look forward to reading the next volume.

Light Yagami, a talented high school student with extremely high intellect, discovers a strange notebook during school and decides to keep it with him. He learns that it is a Death Note, with the power to kill anyone if their name is written inside of it. With it, he wrote down the names of countless criminals and is determined to create a peaceful world with him as its god. However, things take an interesting path when a detective named L interferes with Lights goals.

One makes Death Note one of a kind, is it’s thriller factor and the mind games between 2 geniuses, Light and L. This series absolutely fascinates me, there is almost never a boring moment and it makes you wonder what the characters are gonna try next. I think the only thing that annoys me is one of the characters that appears later, but other than that the story, the pacing, the artwork, is all fantastic. I think that anyone can enjoy this masterpiece of a series.
