Keeping the Moon, by Sarah Dessen

Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen is about fifteen-year-old Nicole "Colie" Sparks' experiences throughout the summer spent at eccentric, unique Aunt Mira's house when Colie's mother, a popular fitness instructor, is on her fitness tour in Europe. Colie is a girl who has never quite fit in. First, the reason was being overweight. Even after losing weight, though, people talked about her being promiscuous and wanting attention. By spending the summer with Aunt Mira in Colby, North Carolina, Colie wishes for a fresh, new start with brand new people around her.

I feel that this story is very strong and compelling, and teenagers can truly relate to it. Negative and hard times with people around you and having difficulty fitting in are things in life that many people have had to deal with growing up. For this reason, I would recommend this wonderful book to all, but especially to teenagers, who can deeply connect to Colie's experiences in the book.

Colie expects the worst, when she's sent to spend the summer with her crazy aunt Mira, while her mom tours Europe because she's a television star. Colie has always been fat and "easy" so she's never really had any friends back home and she doesn't expect to find any in North Carolina. However, when she's there she gets a job at Last Chance Café, and meets two waitresses Isabel and Morgan who are the best of friends. While Colie is there, Isabel and Morgan show Colie a different side of her that she hasn't seen yet, and from there Colie thinks to herself that maybe change might be good.

In my opinion, I thought "Keeping the Moon," by Sara Dessen gave the readers all different aspects of life. It showed the reader how they should be optimistic and not always be unsocial. I liked this book because it showed me that everyone has something special to them and maybe if you change and look at everything from a brighter and better point of view, you will find that special thing in you, just like Colie did.
