An Abundance of Katherines, by John Green

Colin Singleton, a brilliant prodigy, just graduated high school, and instead of being happy and carefree, feels depressed. This is because his girlfriend, Katherine, or K-19, dumps him. Colin has dated 19 girls named Katherine and believes every single one dumped him. His best friend Hassan takes him on a road trip to get his mind off things, and they end up in the town of Gutshot, where Colin meets Lindsey. Will Colin's tradition of dating Katherines end?

I really loved An Abundance of Katherines, by John Green! John Green is an amazing writer, so the writing was flawless and filled with beautiful, deep quotes. It was funny and never boring, the characters were so lovable, and it was just overall really cute. I would recommend this book to fans of John Green and teenagers in general. I would give it a 9 out of 10.

In the novel An Abundance Of Katherines written by John Green, a teenage prodigy named Colin Singleton has only ever dated and been dumped by girls who had the name of Katherine. After being dumped by the nineteenth Katherine, Colin and his chubby best friend who loves Judge Judy, Hassan, go on a road trip as anagram-loving Colin attempts to prove his theory of predicting relationships based on his past experiences of being consistently dumped with his conceptual idea of Dumpers and Dumpees. His undermined attempts bring him to the unappreciated and small town of Gutshot, Tennessee, in which he meets Lindsey Lee Wells and her unappreciative friends. All Colin wants is to prove his theory and to land another Katherine and to just matter, and his obsession complicates his relationships with the people around him and gets him thinking about how important he really is compared to every one else in the world.

An Abundance of Katherines was one of my favorite books, but this is coming from someone who loves every book. What I enjoyed most about the book was the overall concept about teenagers wanting to matter or to be famous when only a small percentage actually make it into stardom. I also loved the diction, or choice of words, of the book. It really expanded my vocabulary! I think any teenager that enjoys a summer book would like this. Reading this book made me think about how small I am to the rest of the world and even if I could be the smartest student at my school, it would mean nothing to the world.

An Abundance of Katherines is a typical romance story consisting of a heartbroken boy and an eager girl. The heartbroken boy, Colin Singleton has been dumped by 19 Katherines, 19 times, and is dumped by the last, Katherine XIX, for the very last time. To reflect and to get over Katherine, Colin is convinced by his best friend, Hasan, to go on a roadtrip to explore other parts of his life. They rest at Gutshot, Tennessee, and that’s where they meet Lindsey, the eager girl. Lindsey has lived in Gutshot her entire life and has no intention of leaving, and isn’t used to change. So when people enter and leave her life, and the truth behind why her mother works to late is revealed, it gets interesting.

John Green is my favorite author, and out of all his books, this one has to be my favorite. Each character feels so realistic but the nature and conditions of the story are surreal. Not exactly a perfect love story but yet has moments that can be captured and framed on a wall. The footnotes are also a big part of the written book and I feel that they capture Colin and his personality a lot and contribute to telling the story from his point of view. Highly recommend if you enjoy John Green’s other books or if you just like a good read.
