The Toll, by Neal Shusterman

The Story takes place over a few years, starting with the main characters Citra and Rowan in hiding. They discover that humanity hasn't been able to have space colonies, as they have purposely been foiled by scythes. The Thunderhead, the (computer mind in charge of the earth), starts building ships on an island. Meanwhile, the Corruption of enjoying killing in the scythedom spreads, as the leader Scythe Goddard discriminates against certain groups. The Thunderhead starts indirectly interfering.

Of Course, anybody who read the first and second books would surely enjoy The Toll, by Neal Shusterman, I think the ending is quite fulfilling, and the storyline is filled with unpredictable twists and turns that keep the story fun to read. The book brings all its problems to a close, and has very unexpected solutions. People looking for a fun book that would surprise them throughout should read this series to the end, which the end is this book. This book made me think about discrimination, and hope's influence.

The Toll picks up after the events of Thunderhead, and concludes the series. Anastasia, Rowan, and Grayson return, along with new characters. Grayson becomes a major religious figure, Anastasia runs away from Goddard, and Rowan is bouncing around trying to survive. Everyone is trying to help fix the broken world, but in the end, they just leave the normal people with the tools to do it themself. We get to find out more about Goddard’s backstory, and he starts to go a bit crazy.

I have mixed views on this book. It had an OK story, but the first part of it was confusing because Shusterman was changing perspectives a lot, and they all took place at separate times, so it was hard to get. I had a problem with the ending too. It was rushed, and instead of a fight with the villain, he is dealt with without the heroes even knowing. Overall, it was a good book, it just had more issues than the last two. I still suggest you read it, especially if you are already into the story.
