Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens tells the story of Kya Clark aka the Marsh Girl. Kya grew up in a marsh in North Carolina and over time her whole family abandoned her. She used her extensive knowledge of the marsh to harvest mussels which she sold to support herself. As she grew older she learned to navigate her feelings of loneliness, but one day she stumbled upon the person who would not only teach her to read but also to love.

I loved Where the Crawdads Sing because it allowed me to reconsider the importance of human bonds. It was also a learning experience for me because most of the facts pertaining to nature in the book are based on real research. The majority of the characters in this book were so complex and filled with love that it made me want to be a part of the Marsh Girl’s story. I highly recommend this book to people who are looking for a complex mystery or coming of age story. Readers who are interested in

The story follows along a young girl named Kya who was abandoned by her family and left to raise herself alone in the marshlands of Barkley Cove, South Carolina. She is outcasted by the town and grows up under the care of the marshland wildlife. Eventually, she is accused of the murder of the town's "golden boy", Chase Andrews, and is arrested. She must prove her innocence against the whole town or face death.

"Where the Crawdads Sing" is one of my favorite novels I have read. Owens does a good job creating detailed and colorful imagery of the marshlands using descriptive words. I enjoyed reading the chapters on Kya's childhood and how here love for biology grew out of her love for the marsh. The book does also a great job depicting the effects of loneliness and isolation. Kya struggles to trust people and experience love and she tries to understand why through biology.
