The Secret History, by Donna Tartt
The Secret History by Donna Tartt is a captivating book that follows Richard Papen, a student at Hampden College in Vermont, who becomes friends with a group of smart but troubled students. The group immerses themselves in the study of Ancient Greek culture and philosophy, seeking beauty and transcendence. Their pursuit leads to murder. As they struggle to maintain their secret, the group slowly begins to deteriorate into paranoia and despair. The novel explores themes of morality and obsession. While this book is haunting, there is something so obscure and eerily beautiful. It was interesting to view each character through the eyes of Richard Papen. Though Richard, like the others at first, seemed to be simple and straightforward, I believe it's the feral and raw flaws of these characters and the way the author makes me justify their mistakes that makes me love this book so much. This book was a long but riveting read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.Reviewed by Isla W., Grade 8
