The Ersatz Elevator, by Lemony Snicket
In the sixth book of the The Ersatz Elevator, by Lemony Snicket, the orphaned Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are sent to live with Jerome and Esme Squalor in a posh penthouse. Indulged in materialism, Esme prioritizes fashion over caring for the kids, and Jerome is a passive man who avoids conflict. Count Olaf, disguised as "Gunther", reappears with a plan to sell the kidnapped Quagmire triplets at an auction. The Baudelaires uncover Olaf's scheme and do everything they can to rescue the children before it is too late.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was one of the most memorable books out of the 13-book series due to the enticing plot and unexpected events. It is fascinating to see how Count Olaf is always able to find out where the children are to devise an evil plan. The setting of the book, a penthouse with a elevator shaft, makes the story very interesting. I truly recommend the series and this book specifically. I would recommend reading the books in order to fully understand the plots!
